The Real Cost of Kravet Performance Fabric: What 6 Years of Procurement Data Shows

I'll skip the setup and give you the bottom line: Kravet performance fabric cost us about a third less per service year than the mid-tier upholstery fabrics we used to buy — even before factoring in reupholstery labor. For a typical lounge chair using 7 yards of fabric:

What Does a Textile Engineer Do? (And Why Your Budget Should Care)

Designers ask me this all the time: what does a textile engineer do? The short answer: they turn a fabric's marketing claims into measurable, testable performance data. Without that, you're buying on vibes.

A textile engineer runs abrasion tests — most commonly the Wyzenbeek method, measured in double rubs — along with lightfastness for fade resistance, tensile strength, seam slippage, pilling, and crocking (dye transfer). They also test real-world behavior: how a fabric handles cleaning chemicals, humidity, or heavy UV exposure. The difference between a fabric labeled "performance" and a fabric verified as performance is exactly what these tests measure.

We have a textile engineer review every fabric before it enters our product line. Two years ago, she flagged a high-performance fabric from another supplier — the abrasion rating passed, but seam slippage failed at the thread weight we use for commercial seating. Translation: the seams would have pulled apart under normal use. That one review prevented a warranty claim bigger than our entire Kravet order that quarter.

Here's something most people don't realize about textile engineering: it's the same discipline used across the whole textile industry, from apparel to upholstery. The engineer on our team started in apparel. The interesting number is what the engineer's test data lets you forecast — how many years that fabric will survive in the real world, and what it will cost to replace when it doesn't.

Where Kravet Upholstery Fabrics Don't Make Sense

To be fair to my cost-controller instincts — and to be honest about the limits of my own analysis — there are places where Kravet upholstery fabrics don't make financial sense.

If a residential client wants a delicate fabric for a formal living room with light foot traffic, a performance fabric changes the hand and drape. The client might hate the way it feels. That's a design conversation, not a procurement one.

If you're furnishing a film set, a trade show booth, or anything designed to last less than 12 months, buy the cheapest fabric that photographs well. The total-cost model only works when the piece is expected to live a long life.

And if the client has a hard budget cap with zero tolerance for change orders, the upfront savings genuinely matter more than the long-term math. I've made that call before, too. Good decisions require good data, but they also require a budget that exists.

What I won't do is pretend those exceptions are the rule. In commercial settings — where pieces get used hard, maintenance schedules are inconsistent, and reupholstery is expensive — Kravet performance fabric has consistently come out ahead in our cost model. That's not brand loyalty. It's arithmetic.

Before you sign off on your next fabric order, ask one question you may not have asked yet: what's the cost per service year, not the cost per yard? If a supplier can't or won't answer it, you're probably paying more than the invoice shows.
