Is Polyester a Good Fabric? A Quality Inspector's Honest Answer

Every couple of weeks, someone asks me some version of this question. Usually there's a story attached. They caught a Kohl's bedding sale and saw the word "polyester" on a tag, then hesitated. Or they found a $19 drape online and wondered if it would fall apart in a year. Or they stood in a designer showroom, stared at a polyester-blend drapery fabric priced at $120 a yard—and their heads started spinning.

Same fiber on the label. Twenty times the price. What's going on?

Fair question. But it's the wrong question. Let me explain.

I'm a quality compliance manager at Kravet. I review every fabric line before it ships to the designers, furniture makers, and commercial clients who order from us—roughly 400 SKUs per season. In 2024, I rejected 6% of first deliveries, mostly for color variance and abrasion-test failures. So when I say "is polyester a good fabric" isn't a useful question, I'm not being pedantic. I've watched the confusion behind it cause expensive, avoidable problems.

Fiber Isn't the Answer

Polyester is a fiber. So are cotton and linen. A fiber is a starting material. It isn't a finished fabric.

Look at two polyester products side by side. A budget curtain from a retail sale—loosely woven, shallowly dyed, no meaningful finishing. Then a contract-grade polyester upholstery textile: heavier yarn, tighter weave, solution-dyed color that runs through the fiber itself, stain-resistant finish. The base polymer is identical. The products are not in the same universe.

Saying "polyester is bad" is like saying "metal is bad." A paperclip is metal. So is a bridge girder. I wouldn't trust a suspension bridge built from paperclips, and I wouldn't want jewelry-grade expectations from a structural girder. The material isn't the problem. The specification is.

I've rejected 100% cotton fabrics for seam slippage. I've approved polyester blends that outlasted natural fibers five-to-one in abrasion testing. Fiber content tells you almost nothing about whether a fabric is appropriate for your project. Yet that's what everyone focuses on, because that's what the retail tag displays.

The Spec Sheet You Never See

Here's the deeper issue: when you buy fabric outside the professional supply chain, you don't get a spec sheet.

What's a spec sheet? It's the performance documentation that tells you how a fabric will behave over time. When a new fabric lands on my desk, I look at five things:

  • Abrasion resistance — measured in double rubs on a Wyzenbeek or Martindale tester. Industry guidelines typically start around 15,000 double rubs for residential and climb to 30,000+ for contract-grade.
  • Lightfastness — how much the color will fade in sunlight over time. This one matters more than most people realize, especially for drapery.
  • Seam slippage — whether stitching will hold under tension or start pulling out.
  • Tear strength — how easily a snag becomes a split.
  • Flammability compliance — often non-negotiable for commercial projects and required by local fire codes.

None of this makes it onto a retail tag. The retail tag says "100% polyester." Technically true. Completely useless. A budget bed-in-a-bag from a department store has no abrasion rating, no lightfastness grade, no fire-code documentation. It's a product, not a specification.

The $19 curtain and the $120 performance fabric can look identical in a listing photo. They age completely differently. The difference is in the testing, and the testing is invisible unless you ask.

I'm not a textile chemist, so I can't speak to dye chemistry at the molecular level. What I can tell you from a quality-management perspective is simpler: testing catches what marketing hides. If a fabric has no test data, you're not buying performance. You're buying hope.

Why the Humble Synthetic Wins

Take sparkle vinyl upholstery fabric as an example. It sounds like the opposite of luxury. Vinyl isn't even woven—it's a coated material. But a hospitality client asked for it across a full restaurant renovation, and honestly? It was the right choice.

The sparkle is the aesthetic. The vinyl substrate is the engineering. It wipes clean after a dinner rush, passes NFPA 701 flame resistance, and still looks respectable after a thousand covers. A silk-blend velvet would have been ruined in the first month. The client didn't pick vinyl because they couldn't afford "real" fabric. They picked it because it was the only material that could survive their environment.

Here's the counterintuitive truth: good fabric is fabric that matches its environment. Aspirational materials fail when they ignore real conditions. Humble synthetics win when they're chosen for actual reasons.

The question isn't "is this fiber good?" It's "was this fabric tested for the job I'm giving it?"

What Happens When Nobody Checks

The failures I see aren't caused by "bad fiber." They're caused by matching the wrong fabric to the right situation—and nobody checking the data.

A boutique hotel reupholstered its 120-seat dining room in a gorgeous natural linen blend. Beautiful hand. Perfect drape. Fourteen weeks in, the seams started pulling. Cushions looked tired. The redo cost $22,000 and delayed their launch. The fabric was 51% linen. Its seam-slippage rating was nowhere near what contract seating demands. Nobody verified. That's the whole story.

Drapery fails slower, which makes it worse. A residential client bought a beautiful blue drapery from a budget retailer at a price that felt like a win. Eight months later, west-facing sun had faded it to a washed-out gray. No lightfastness rating existed on the tag. Nobody told her she needed one. She's still telling it as a cautionary tale.

This is why I'm careful when designers ask about a specific Kravet blue fabric. We test our fabrics for lightfastness and publish the results. But a fabric that's perfect for a north-facing bedroom can fail in a sun-blasted west window. The spec doesn't lie. The application does.

Looking back, I should have pushed harder earlier to get our residential spec sheets in front of end clients. I assumed designers were passing the data along. Most weren't—they were selling the look, not the performance story. We changed our documentation process in 2022 because of that assumption. It cost us a few painful lessons first.

So... Is Polyester a Good Fabric?

Here's my honest answer: it depends on what you're asking the fabric to do. And if a brand can't tell you what their fabric was tested for, that's your answer too.

  1. Define the use case before you look at anything. Daily-use sofa with kids and pets? High-traffic hotel lounge? A decorative chair that will be mostly admired? Write that down first.
  2. Ask for the test data. Abrasion rating. Lightfastness grade. Seam-slippage numbers. If a salesperson can't provide them, that's a red flag. Most reputable brands publish this. I can pull the spec sheet for any Kravet drapery fabric in about a minute.
  3. Match the spec to your reality. A polyester drapery fabric with a high lightfastness rating is an excellent choice for a sun-drenched room. A beautiful natural linen with no data is a gamble. Bet on numbers, not adjectives.

I'll say something here that occasionally surprises people: I recommend performance-tested synthetics for anything with daily wear, kids, food, or commercial traffic. But if you're choosing a single accent chair that will be mostly looked at—buy the silk. Buy the fancy weave. The spec sheet matters a lot less when the stakes are low.

There's no universal "best" fabric. There's only the fabric that fits your situation. Anyone who tells you otherwise is usually selling the confidence to skip the research.

The most satisfying part of my job is when a spec sheet quietly prevents a disaster. No seam failures. No faded panels. No frantic calls from a designer whose project is in trouble. Nobody notices the fabric that worked. To me, that's the whole point.

So, is polyester a good fabric? Yes. No. It depends entirely on the job you're giving it.

Ask better questions before you buy, and you'll rarely go wrong.
