Fabric Quality by Scenario: What an Inspector Actually Checks

I get asked something close to that every week — by designers, purchasing agents, and sometimes by someone whose couch no longer looks the way it did in the showroom. My honest answer is rarely satisfying: it depends. After four years of reviewing textiles before they ship, I've learned that quality is not a universal score. It's a match between a material and the job it has to do.

A ten-ounce cotton duck can be ideal for an awning and awful for a shirt. A delicate silk velvet can be perfect on a lounge chair and a poor choice for a family room sofa. The old "heavier fabric is better" rule comes from an era when weight was the only route to durability — before engineered yarns, protective finishes, and solution-dyed fibers changed the game. So this guide doesn't pretend there's a one-size-fits-all answer. Instead, here are the four situations where I see fabric quality get confused, and what I actually check in each one.

Scenario A: You're Selecting Fabric for a High-End Interior

If the fabric is going on an upholstered piece in a designer-led project, pattern continuity and color consistency matter more than almost anything else. Those details don't show up in a product photo, and they can be hard to see in a small swatch.

Kravet ikat fabric is a good example. A well-executed ikat weave has a specific, repeatable pattern and clean color separation. When the repeat drifts even half an inch, you notice it the moment two panels are seamed together. In Q1 2024, I rejected a 1,600-yard lot because the pattern repeat was 1.25 inches off the approved standard on half the rolls. Normal tolerance in our process is 0.25 inch. The vendor said it was within industry tolerances. It wasn't within ours, so we sent it back. They redid it at their cost.

Performance fabric gets the same level of scrutiny, but for different reasons. When someone asks whether Kravet performance fabric is worth it, I ask where the piece will live. If it's a formal living room that gets used three times a year, a performance weave is a nice-to-have. If it's a family room or commercial seating area, performance isn't a luxury — it's a specification. What I look for is whether the performance claim is real. Quality means knowing which test was used and what the results were, not just trusting a label that says "performance."

If a product is marketed as "eco-friendly" or "recyclable," those words should survive a simple follow-up question too. The FTC's Green Guides (ftc.gov, 16 CFR Part 260) say broad environmental claims need to be qualified and substantiated. If the supplier can't tell you what makes it eco-friendly, that vagueness is a red flag.

Why does all this matter? Because fabric is the first thing people touch when they sit down. If the pattern doesn't line up or the fabric ages badly, the designer takes the blame, not the mill. The quality of the fabric becomes the quality of the professional who chose it.

Scenario B: You're Buying an Awning or Welded Outdoor Fabric

Outdoor fabric changes the calculation completely. When you're buying an awning, the fabric weave is rarely the weak point. The seams are. Most modern awning fabrics are coated or laminated, and sections are joined by heat and pressure using an awning fabric welding machine. That machine is where quality gets won or lost.

The most common mistake I see is trying to make the weld "stronger" by turning up the heat. It works the opposite way. Excessive heat degrades the polymer coating, and while the seam can pass a pull test on day one, it may crack or separate after months of sun exposure. Not enough heat is just as bad because the film never fuses and the seam peels open. The right weld is a consistent weld.

I don't have hard data on industry-wide awning failure rates, but based on warranty claims I reviewed last summer, my sense is that at least 70 percent of failures were seam-related rather than fabric-related. In 2022, an order of 80 commercial awning panels came back with delaminated seams after about 14 months on site. The replacement cost landed near $22,000, and the fabric itself was never the problem.

If you're on the buying side, ask the fabricator how they verify welds. The test I use is a simple one-inch peel test: the fabric should tear before the weld lets go.

Scenario C: You're Sourcing Jersey Shirt Fabric

Jersey shirt fabric is a different category entirely. Apparel knits are sold by how they perform on a body, not by how they look on a roll. The three things I check are stretch recovery, shrinkage, and dye fastness.

There's a widespread belief that a stretchier jersey is automatically a better jersey. It isn't. Stretch without recovery just means a shirt that bags out at the elbows or sags at the hem by mid-afternoon. I'd rather have a fabric with moderate stretch and full recovery than something that stretches twice as much and never returns.

Shrinkage is the other big trap. We run a three-cycle home laundry test on incoming lots. In 2023, a mill quoted a jersey at 3 percent shrinkage based on their own test data. When our wash test came back closer to 8 percent, we rejected the shipment. An 8 percent shrink turns a medium shirt into a small after two washes. No construction detail can save a garment from a fabric that hasn't been stabilized.

Scenario D: You're Trying to Clean an Existing Fabric Couch

Test any cleaner on a hidden section before using it on a visible surface. This isn't a clever insider trick; it's the same sample-testing rule I use in our QC room, and it prevents most disasters. The strongest product is rarely the best product.

How to Tell Which Scenario You're In

If you're still unsure which of these applies to your situation, ask yourself three questions.

  1. Where will the fabric live? Sun, moisture, and repeated washing demand more structural quality than a decorative piece in a room that gets moderate use.
  2. Who notices if it fails? If you're a designer or a manufacturer, poor fabric doesn't just cost you money — it shapes how clients see your work. If you're a homeowner, it shapes your daily comfort.
  3. What failure can't you live with? If pattern mismatch bothers you most, shop in person and request larger memos. If stains are the fear, performance fabric is worth the premium. If the couch already exists, focus on the cleaner that matches the fiber instead of the one with the boldest label.

In 2022, I ran a blind comparison in our showroom with two upholstery fabrics — one near $6 per yard and one near $18, based on what we paid at the time. Over 80 percent of the designers who viewed them without prices described the premium option as more professional. On a 50-yard order, that difference is roughly $600. A real number, but small next to the cost of redoing an installation or losing a repeat client.

That's the thing about quality. It's not about heaviness or price. It's about choosing the right material for the job and checking the right details before you commit. Get it right, and no one will notice the fabric — which is exactly the point.
